Half-way between the Ile d'Aix and Ile d'Oléron, Fort Boyard was above all designed to protect the natural harbour of Ile d'Aix and the port of Rochefort.

 

In 1950, it was added to the historic monuments supplementary list. Previously owned privately, it is now the property of the Conseil Général de la Charente-Maritime. Fully restored it has reclaimed its splendour and become the set for a well-known television game.
